Most customized projects look impressive in any home but they also come with a fancy price tag. As with most contracted projects it ends up being the labor instead of the materials you pay dearly for.

Combined with unpredictable time frames and exorbitant labor cost many homeowners are choosing do it yourself home improvements. A sliding door system is a practical and inexpensive option to spruce up your home.

They are constructed in such a fashion that they allocate the ultimate use of space in any room of your house. Depending on your home improvement budget you can either hire a professional for the installation of your interior sliding door systems or realize a savings you can put towards other projects by doing the work yourself with an interior door replacement kit.

Your first step in doing the work on your own would be to measure the existing closet doors. You might also take digital photographs as a comparison in order to standardize the sliding door system you are replacing in the rooms you are updating. The key to any smooth installation is having the right tools for the job. So before beginning any home improvement do it yourself project, figure into your budget acquiring the right tools for the job.

Any door system replacement kit whether it is for a closet door or exterior sliding door systems for patio doors will come with a step by step instructional pamphlet with installation instructions. One of your major concerns when replacing exterior or interior sliding doors is that they complement your present patio ornamentation or bedroom decor. The hardware that comes with a sliding door system or if you choose substitutes will determines the success of the project.

You can purchase these doors in both finished and unfinished condition. Complete your measurements to make sure the new doors match with the size of the old doors otherwise you will have to make another trip to the home improvement center. This could also result in more work than you anticipated if you need to refit the new doors.Unfinished doors will require a coat of lacquer or paint before being hung. It can be quite a daunting task so you may want to hire a professional to complete that step for you or choose a matching finish as the starting point.

Commercial sliding doors systems are also used extensively in business offices to provide a new look to the decor. They are manufactured with retractable design panels constructed with screen systems for the sliding glass. The panels are made to move either up or down or in a sideways configuration and can be found in a variety of accents and colors.

Replacement kits and door repair kits are very economical and easy to purchase for any sliding door system. When you modify your old doors with a brand new design you open up the creative potential throughout room. You gain much needed floor space in addition to displaying your skills as a decorator.

As mentioned previously it is a remodel you can do yourself. Simply remove the old doors by lifting them from their tracks. If you experience any difficulty tug gently while holding down the small lever that holds the door in place.

Any other concerns can be addressed with your local sliding door company. There you will find skilled professionals that can assist you with your project. Any issues with an existing new sliding door unit can be addressed with the company where they were bought. Check your warranty before consulting the manufacturer.

When you replace your old doors with new sliding doors make sure they are measured to the old track lengthwise. You want them to be the same in comparison however if it measures larger you can cut down the new track with a hacksaw. Mount the door brackets in the exact location of the old one.

Tighten any screws that need tightening. Your instructional manual will show you how to mount the rollers correctly on the upper sides of the doors. If you purchase doors with mounted rollers that will save you one extra step.

Once all the parts are in place you are ready to place your new sliding doors on their tracks. You have completed a home improvement project at half the cost and realized all the benefits you would have gotten if you hired a professional.

• Appearance is another benefit. Vinyl windows are attractive and long lasting. They look great for a long time, and you may be able to choose the color that fits your home’s interior or exterior appearance. You can choose a product that looks impressive no matter what your home’s exterior looks like.

DIY improvements for your patio door security

Patio doors can add character to any home. Homes can be improved by installing patio doors. They let natural light in, provide ease of access to a back garden or patio area and certainly look a lot more attractive than a regular back wall. There are many different styles and options available and they offer the best way to bridge the gap between the inside and the outdoors. Having said that, they also seem to catch the eyes of thieves.

Criminals will always have a variety of ways to break in, but a full panel door will be inviting for them. Even huge, heavy panels of glass can easily be utilised to get in, even by relatively inexperienced burglars.

On hand to help you, there are a range of security measures you can take to minimise this. Making just a few changes you can change it from being really appealing to a burglar, into a nightmare.

Most of the patio doors or orangeries on the market will come with latches as opposed to locks. The downside of latches is that they can be overpowered with the right amount of force.

One simple way you can secure your door, without any real expense, is to simply place a rod or block in the door track, wedged between the door and the wall.

If a burglar has enough time and the rear of the garden is not in view, they can lift a patio door off it’s track. Shaking a door off it’s tracks only takes patience and some jiggling. It is doable because there is no way to seal the doors down because they lay on rollers on the tracks. To minimise the chances of this happening is simply down to keeping an eye on the rollers to make sure they stay in good condition, and if need be replacing them. It should fight tightly in to the frame and move smoothly along the rollers. If this is not the case then you should get it repaired immediately, this will make it a lot more difficult for thieves to pop it loose.

There are also locks you can buy that protect the rollers. These foot locks have steel rods which are protruding into the tracks of the rollers. This creates a deadbolt for the door, stopping it from being opened even when the latch has been lifted. It also connect the door directly to the track which prevents it from being lifted.

Even though they are simple techniques, they are proven to reduce the chances of a successful break in. Most opportunist burglars will be put off instantly by anything that makes them work harder. In addition to this advice guide, you can invest in a heavy duty lock for your patio door to replace the latch. For double glazing prices, look to a company with a good reputation.

Retrofit window installation is really the easiest of all. The retrofit window already comes with an exterior trim attached. That’s the flush fin that goes against the outside surface, usually stucco. Prepare the window by drilling 3/8″ holes in the areas of the frame where you want to screw it in place. Normally, there will be 3 holes on each side and 3 more across the top. Don’t predrill any holes in the bottom track. After removing the old panels, you want to run a heavy bead of caulk on the face of the old aluminum frame that you left in place. Then you and a helper set the bottom of the vinyl window onto the old aluminum bottom track and raise it into position. The flush fin or retrofit lip will act as a “stop” to hold the window in place. Have your helper hold the window while you go inside.

Once inside, you want to center the window in the opening. Slide the vent panel open and closed to make sure the window is plumb and level. To adjust for out of square conditions, shim the bottom right or left corner by placing a shimming material between the sill and bottom of the window frame. Once square, drive a 3″ deck screw through the 3/8″ holes and into the wood studs. Just seat the screw, don’t over tighten. After you get the screws into the sides and top, remove the sliding panel. The bottom track should lift out. Look for drainage holes in the track and insert a thin screwdriver and lift up. Drive one screw in the bottom center, caulk around the screw head, then put the track back in place and re-install the sliding panel. Now, you want to go back outside and caulk the gap where the retrofit fin meets the exterior surface of the house. You want to have a double barrier of protection against water infiltration. Remember, you already applied a generous bead of caulk before inserting the new frame into the opening. The rest of the job is done on the inside.

First, you want to plug the 3/8″ screw holes to hide the heads of the screws. We sell the hole plugs on the website. Just click on the “shop” tab to see a picture. The plugs will pop into place in the hole. The next step is to fill the gap around the new frame with R-13 Insulation. Do not use the foam insulation that comes in a can. Many manufacturers will not honor the warranty if the foam is used. Even the non expanding foams can cause the frame to distort, causing problems. Pack the insulation in tight. You might want to wear a dust mask during this procedure. Many people, myself included, are very sensitive to insulation. After the insulation is in place, you want to install trim around the inside to finish the job. You can use wood trim from the hardware store, or some other product. But in my experience, the best product is a vinyl flat trim that matches the window frame. The flat trim can also be purchased on the website under the “shop” tab, or you could try to find it from a local window contractor. Ours comes in 3 different widths, although the 1 3/4″ wide piece is by far the most common. The trim has a double sided adhesive tape on the back. You cut the top and bottom first, stick them on the vinyl frame, making sure the trim goes to the drywall. This covers all the insulation and the old metal frame. Do the side pieces next. The final step is to caulk where the trim meets the walls.

Much of the installation process for a replacement frame is the same as the retrofit frame. But, there are a few differences. When you put the new window into the opening using a replacement frame, you don’t have the flush fin holding the frame in place. You and your helper have to hold the frame in place while you put a screw in the top center to support the frame. Then, you can do your adjusting for a square condition. All of the procedures on the inside will be exactly the same, from hole plugs, to insulation, to trim and caulk. The outside is different. You have to apply the trim that was part of the retrofit frame. Again, I prefer the flat trim. Once again, you apply a bead of caulk to the old frame, then measure and cut the top and bottom trim pieces. Apply the adhesive part of the trim to the vinyl frame, and let the other part contact the bead of caulk. Trim all four sides, then caulk again where the trim meets the exterior material.

As you can see, it really doesn’t matter if the exterior of your home is brick, stone, siding, or stucco. You can install vinyl windows without having to damage the surrounding structure. We have step by step instructional videos for sale on the website at how-to-install-windows.com. Next week we are going to start discussing sliding glass door replacement.

How to Shop for a Good Quality Replacement Window
When shopping for a good quality replacement window, one rule that will never change when buying things is that you get what you pay for. While a person can overpay for a high quality window, they will still own a high quality window. If you overpay for a builder grade window, it may fail quickly and you will not only own a builder grade window, but may have to replace it. Take careful note of what you want from your window purchase and find a window manufacturer that makes what you want. There are a lot of options in the market place.

Visual beauty can be very important to some people. The best looking replacement windows will have the same size frame all the way around the perimeter (for horizontal sliding designs especially). Many of the less attractive replacement windows have the front, left, and top sides of the frame wide, while the bottom is narrow. A quality replacement window with a beveled frame will look better than a basic box frame (which is the cheapest).

Sliding windows which have screens that remove to the inside are more attractive than the old fashioned designs, whereby the screens are removed to the outside leaving the open track to gather dust and debris. A good quality replacement window will offer superior performance ratings. It should feature a “U” Value of .30 or less for cold weather and a SHGC of .30 or less to keep the heat out in the summer.

Replacement Windows and the energy tax credit
A replacement window that meets the above criteria would qualify for Obama’s 2009-2010 Energy Tax Credit (for full details, visit the Department of Energy’s website). Most energy star rated windows on the market over the past few years will not meet this tough standard for the rebate. A replacement window that meets these specifications will offer tremendous summer and winter comfort and save you money on heating and cooling bills.

Replacement Windows of high quality have good seals
A good quality replacement window should have a “super spacer” type seal (multiple part seal system), or the good window ratings you get day one may fade away quickly as the gas leaks out between the glass panes. Many companies promote metal seal systems and come up with lots of fancy names for them, but in my experience, none of them are made to last. The intercept spacer (raw untreated steel bent in a “U” profile) was originally introduced to transport glass over mountain passes.

The “U” design bends inward, so as the air gets thinner going over a mountain pass and the glass flexes inward, the seals do not fail as often as a rigid box metal spacer. Additionally, it is quick and very cheap to manufacture.

          ]]>

Replacement Windows of high quality are multi-chambered
A quality replacement window (vinyl) frame should be multi-chambered. A general rule is that the fewer the chambers, the cheaper and weaker the window frame. Foam in a frame adds a bit of additional insulating value, but is not a substitute for multiple chambers as it adds nothing in terms of structural value. It is far cheaper for a window manufacturer to add some foam inserts to a weak frame than to build a multiple chambered window. A structural, multi-chambered window is harder and more expensive to manufacture.

A side note on how vinyl frame extrusions are made (the process is similar to the old Play Dough toys): Vinyl pellets are gravity fed into what appears to be a huge auger-fed meat grinder. The high pressure created when the pellets are compressed melts the vinyl, which is then pushed through a series of metal dies. Each machined metal die is more precise than the preceding one until a nice even vinyl extrusion emerges. This vinyl extrusion is then floated out onto a long water trough to cool and cut into sections. The more complex the extrusion dies are, the more costly they are to manufacture and maintain and the more complex the extrusion, the greater the amount of vinyl material required to manufacture it.

The best replacement windows will have multiple chambers with foam inserts. In a wet area like the Northwest, it is not a bad idea to have a frame design that is sloped internally for water drainage. A window frame with a sloped internal drainage plane and foam chambering on all four sides is being developed to meet the special needs of the wet Pacific Northwest area. A sloped surface drains quicker than a flat one. A window with a thick outer wall is good also because a lot of the weight of the glass can be placed on the outer wall of a vinyl frame. An 80 mil. double strength outer wall is a nice option for long term stability and strength if a window is installed without a nailing flange. Finally, the actual vinyl material should be virgin vinyl. Vinyl can be recycled, which is good for the environment, but it can also be combined (diluted) with materials like chalk, which causes problems over time.

Replacement Windows of high quality are fusion welded
A good quality replacement window will feature fusion welded corners. Welders range in cost from a couple hundred dollars to a million dollars or more. The million dollar welder does things the cheaper welders cannot do. Hydraulics simultaneously line up all four corners precisely and the automated welder welds through the entire frame, effectively welding the internal chambers as well. This type of structural welder increases the longevity and strength of the window. Regular welders often only weld the outer edges that you see, not the internal structure.

A good quality replacement window will offer features not found in builder grade windows. Some popular features include: “invisible” screens for homes with a view, removable window tracks for easy cleaning, multi lock systems such as 4 point locks on sliding doors, self cleaning glass, a performance rating like the one listed above, covered weep holes to keep out bugs and wind, stainless hardware where needed (such as near salt water), and tilt options where applicable (note: some tilt ins will not have a high performance rating because the exposed tracks tend to let wind through, which hurts the “U” Value ratings in the simulation testing).

Edge Spacers
Energy efficient windows often employ super spacers having “warm edge technology”. (Spacers refer to the material used to keep the two panes of glass apart while also providing an air tight seal.) “Super Spacers” keep the windows warmer around the edges where condensation often occurs. By eliminating aluminum which transmits heat rapidly (1416 BTU’s per hour) and replacing it with a foam insulator, dramatic improvements are made, both in energy performance and in reducing condensation along the glass perimeter.

The best windows use less conductive materials such as foam and rubber. Some companies employ a double sealing technique whereby the foam seal is used to provide the highest insulating value and then a secondary rubber or polymer sealant is applied over that to prevent gas escaping and seals from breaking. Warm edge spacers can improve the U-value of a window by 10% and boost the edge temperature, thereby reducing condensation.

Replacement Windows of high quality have good warranties
A good quality replacement window will have an excellent warranty. The rule here is that the big print giveth, while the small print taketh away. A comparison of window manufacturers’ warranties will give you a good idea of how long the manufacturer believes their windows will last and what will fail. Warranties vary widely. I hope this article offers an insight into what components go into making a good quality replacement window. The next challenge is finding a company that does quality installations.

Article by Dixie Mat News

We’ve been making pretty good progress through our window glossary, and the forecast only shows more of the same. In previous installments here on the Croft LLC. blog, we covered some pretty key information regarding the way double paned windows help to better insulate; the insulating gasses used to fill the space; and some important organizations that help ensure a quality product and a quality aluminum window, vinyl window, storm window, or patio door buying experience. We’ll give a quick recap of our discussion last month, then we’ll move into the new terms for the coming month. As we’ve discussed many times, annealing is the process through which glass is made stronger. If glass hasn’t been annealed, it is more likely to shatter and cleave in dangerous ways. This is just one of many improvements made to window glass in modern times. Another improvement is that of making windows multi-paned. By using space as an insulator, multi-paned windows can offer greater efficiency. Cushions of air essentially serve as a buffer to even out temperature change. By using different fillers within the window cavity, heat loss and gain can be lessened even further. Argon, one such insulator, can help to help reduce the amount of energy that is allowed to pass through a window. As our world becomes increasingly energy conscious, these tools to increase energy efficiency will become even more prominent and important. The model of the home as a sealed and temperature-controlled environment is a helpful way to visualize and understand the importance of energy efficiency measures. In this equation, quality aluminum windows or vinyl windows can make the difference in the energy efficiency of a residence or business. As a consumer, it’s important to be aware and informed when buying aluminum windows and patio doors. There is a lot to know. This is where testing organizations and standard-setting organizations can ease the burden of consumers. That’s where we left off last time, so with everyone up to speed, lets get underway looking at this month’s new vocabulary.

The ANSI (American National Standards Institute) is basically a one-stop shop for standards and specifications of all different types. Obviously, the need for coherent and solid standard measures in a manufacturing industry (especially vinyl windows and aluminum windows) is huge. The level of precision in the window manufacturing process can make or break the overall quality of the final product. Another important organization in the standard and quality measurement department is the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers). To add to the list, the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) also contributes to the standard setting and quality control in the window manufacturing industry. Without organizations such as these, the aluminum window and vinyl window industry could be very hit or miss. The standards established by these organizations help ensure buyer confidence and help to improve the overall quality of the products in the industry. As we’ve been discussing over the past several weeks, the energy efficiency of a home can be made or broken by the quality of the windows and doors that seal the house from the outside world. Therefore, quality is a very important issue. With organizations in place to help ensure strong standards by which to measure and gauge the quality of the products, the industry has been able to build consumer confidence and product quality.

Patio doors are usually made of wood, but may also be made of fibre glass, aluminium, or steel. Security is an important consideration in choosing a patio door, and multi-point locking systems are available. Patio doors may consist of simple fixed and hinged panels, they may have bypass sliding operation, or they may slide and fold.

Slide and fold patio doors have the benefit that they can open the whole side of the room to the outside space. PVCU patio doors are convenient to operate for everyone in the home. PVCU patio doors are also aesthetically appealing as they can transform the look and feel of your home, and add considerable value too. Patio door repair is common, especially for sliding patio doors. If your patio door is having trouble sliding open or closed, first put your head down on the ground and see if the wheels have come off the track. You may be able to simply refit the patio door on the track.

Newer patio doors have double contact points that better distribute the door’s weight and minimize this wear, but your patio door may have only a single contact point. A new stainless steel cap should work for this patio door repair. The latest PVCU patio doors are highly energy efficient due to the inherent insulation of our multi-chamber PVC-U profiles and advanced energy-saving glass technology.

PVCU patio doors have the frames reinforced with galvanised steel for strength, toughened safety glass, advanced locking systems and internal glazing. UPVC stands for Unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride, and is a type of plastic used in windows, gutters and door frames. This material is popular due to its low maintenance and tough nature. UPVC doors are also very low cost compared to other door types such as wood.

Most UPVC patio doors are made up mostly of glass, because this provides natural sunlight and also a view of the outside. If you have a wooden patio door, you can level the door by shaving off some wood at the part where it is sticking. But before you do so, you can try on the few steps given above.

Article by Joan One

There are a wide range of designs, styles and options of patio doors to select from for your home. It is important to keep in mind the amount of space you are working with when choosing the right patio doors for your home. If you have a small space, you may want to go for sliding doors for your doors. On the other hand, a large patio would be best served by a pair of expansive French-style doors. The doors you select should also be weather tight against the elements such as wind, rain and snow.

There are two basic types of patio doors which include the hinged patio doors and the sliding or gliding patio doors. Hinged doors are normally available as French doors which come in a set of two doors. These normally open to the outside and may have a lot of glass incorporated into their overall construction, thus allowing you a view of the outside. There are certain other hinged doors that come in the form of accordion doors and are therefore able to fold open. If you are living in regions with warmer climates, you should consider investing in a good pair of accordion doors which also happen to be very space efficient. On the other hand, the sliding patio doors are normally available in a set of two, in which case one door slides past the other and in most cases these are entirely made out of glass.

Patio doors may be constructed from a broad spectrum of materials. These include glass which is the most common choice, and which may be incorporated as a solid panel or in a multitude of small panels which are set within a frame. If you reside in colder climates, you may consider having your glass double paned, insulated or specially treated such that it’s able to trap the heat inside your home. Alternatively, you could go for doors made from aluminum and vinyl, which tend to be cheaper options ideal for those working with a tight budget. You should however keep in mind that you get what you pay for and should therefore not expect aluminum or vinyl doors to wear as well as the glass patio doors.

Installing these doors isn’t as simple as it may seem and should therefore only be done by a professional. This is because it is important to get a tight seal, as well as ensure that the weather stripping in the door frame has been placed properly. This particularly applies to the older homes as it can often prove challenging when hanging the doors such that they are plumb, be able to seal out the elements and still be able to open and close the doors easily. Be sure to also select doors that will fit into the space without requiring any modifications. It is therefore advisable to dig deeper into your pocket to find the cash to pay for a professional door installation service that will ensure that your patio doors are perfectly installed the first time around.
