How to Paint Doors and Windows

The first thing to be done in painting the doors in your house is to remove them first from the door frames or door jambs. Do not paint them while they are hanging by the door frames. It is very easy to remove the doors as they are on loose pin hinges. There is no need to unscrew the hinges. All you need to do is slide the pin of the hinges upwards.

Instructions

1

Paintingthe door

Lean the door against a wall, but be sure to put a block in between the door and the wall. At the bottom of the door, put also two small blocks of wood or plywood so that the door does not touch the floor. Or, if the position is not too comfortable to you, you may just lay the door across two sawhorses and work on it horizontally. It’s advantageous since you can control the paint to be collecting on the corners which will result to dripping when the door is inupright position.

The normal way to paint the door is to move from top to the bottom when it is in upright position. For doors with insetpanels, first paint the panel molding and the inside edges of the panel cavities. Then paint the horizontal and vertical strips around the panels. Don’t rehang the door to its frame when the paint has not been thoroughly dried. For the door casing, begin with the top casing and work down the side casings.

2

Painting windows

The delicate business of painting windows has frustrated many a painter. Follow this tip in painting windows in order to avoid frustrations from what you are doing.

For best window-painting result, a steady hand and right brush are the tools you need. Do not be tempted to do fast painting job thinking that you can scrape off excess paint later. Scraping might damage the glass materials in a window. Never ignore to apply masking tapes on the glazing to avoid very costly mistakes. The glass must remain clean before or after painting.

Double-hung windows: Raise and lower the sashes as needed to reach all the parts. Start with the outer (or upper) sash. If your windows have small panes, start by painting the horizontal muntins (molding that divides the window into sections); then work on the vertical muntins. Next, paint the exposed parts of the stiles, and the top and bottom rails, in that order. Finally, paint the inner (or outer) sash, starting with the muntins and finishing with the rails. To prevent sticking, carefully move the sashes once or twice while the paint is drying.

If your windows are designed so the sashes can be removed, simply lift them out (if weather conditions do permit), lay them on a table or other surface, and paint them. Be prepared to leave the sashes out long enough to dry thoroughly. Finally, you need to wax the jamb (side lining where the window slides), Don’t wax a metal jamb and don’t paint any jamb—this can cause it to stick later.

Casement windows: First, paint any vertical muntins, then any horizontal muntins. Next, paint the top and bottom rails, and then the stiles. Then paint the casing as you would that of a double-hung windows.

Tips & Warnings

Important note: To remove bristles that come off your brush as you’re applying paint, touch them with the tip of your wet brush—the bristles should adhere to the brush. Use a cloth to wipe the stray bristles off the brush.
